Beer – it’s what’s for breakfast. Alright, maybe not for the general population, but at ReGrained it’s what gets us up in the morning. Beer is the main source of inspiration for the very product you might be eating while reading this post – our IPA and Stout bars!
It turns out we aren’t the only ones using brewers’ spent grain for a sustainable purpose. This diverse ingredient is being incorporated into all kinds of useful products, and we thought we’d share them with you.
Six-Pack Ring
SaltWater Brewery in Delray Beach, FL is using their brewers’ spent grain to tackle the ever-growing problem of plastic six-pack rings. Plastic six-pack rings are particularly harmful to oceanic wildlife, and this Atlantic coast brewery is taking action to protect their local ecosystem. SaltWater Brewery created a spent grain six-pack ring to package their beer with.
These new six-pack rings are made with barley and wheat ribbons from the brewing process. They are also 100% biodegradable and edible, providing marine mammals with a snack rather than a death trap.

Dog Treats
Man’s best friend meets man’s favorite drink. Beer grains are the perfect base ingredient for delicious, nutritious dog treats. All you homebrewers can bake these yourselves with the grain from your own homebrew. Deschutes Brewery has a step by step guide on how to make spent grain dog treats.
If you’re looking to buy pre made dog biscuits, the Portland Pet Food Company has you covered.
