As entrepreneurs, we face an interesting dynamic between innovating, and avoiding the mistake of reinventing the wheel. We want to redefine business-as-usual but also learn from the trials and tribulations of our “elders.” Successful founders are often generous with their candor, but too often their insights are not available to the public until they write a book, if at all. NPR’s How I Built This is changing the game: now, every week we have the benefit of a new founder sharing their story.
At ReGrained we listen to this podcast religiously. Many of our idols have been featured, such as Patagonia’s Yvon Chouinard, Clif Bar’s Gary Erickson, and Virgin’s Richard Branson. We’ve also learned from relevant but unfamiliar stories, such as how Brian Scudamore started 1-800-GOT-JUNK and created value from what others discard.
Each episode concludes with a “How You Built That” segment that introduces earlier-stage entrepreneurs. This week, it was our privilege to be featured on this segment (the last 5 minutes or so of the episode). We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
If we should be so fortunate for our success to continue, perhaps someday we will have the honor to earn a full episode! Until then, we know what we have to do, and couldn’t do it without the power of our community behind us.
